UTOPIA – Breakthrough or Collapse?

COMIC Artists sharpen our vision, seek new paths, and open up new worlds.

Announcing a Utopian-Dystopian Exhibition of Visionary Comic Worlds

The Opening Reception (Vernissage) Sunday, July 5, 2026 , at 11:15 AM
at Die Abtei (The Abbey), Wasserzucht 1, 31515 Wunstorf, Germany

In this exhibition, we present works by contemporary comic artists. Why? Because comics are the ultimate medium for utopia!

The possibilities within the comic medium are infinite. Absolutely nothing limits the imagination or the scope of representation.

Comic artists can—and are free to—depict anything and everything: there are no boundaries; anything goes. All that is required to bring visions to life is a pen and paper, a tablet, a wall, or any other surface.

More than 30 exceptional illustrators and comic creators—hailing from the KUNSTorf and Hanover region, Northern Germany, Europe, and across the globe—will showcase their work within the beautiful Abbey in KUNSTorf. What do their visions of our future look like? What will they draw, depict, and express?

The Opening Reception (Vernissage) will take place on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at 11:15 AM at Die Abtei (The Abbey), Wasserzucht 1, 31515 Wunstorf, Germany. You are all cordially invited!

Information about the artists

Andreas Wehrheim

Hanover - Germany

https://www.andreas-wehrheim.de

Andreas Wehrheim, born in 1974, holds a degree in Design (Dipl.-Des. (FH)) from the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, where he studied communication design. He has been a freelance illustrator and comic artist for over 20 years. He has participated several times in the German-French comic artist seminar in Erlangen. His comics are published by various publishers and in various magazines. His approachable, semi-humorous style is also popular with media agencies, companies, and public institutions, for which he creates commissioned works and comics. As a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hanover, he teaches “Comic Drawing” in the Media Design department. Together with his students, he has produced seven comic anthologies, each the length of a graphic novel, which he co-edited and published. These include themed comics for the Landesmuseum Hannover.

“Building Cleaning of the Future” Project
Author Bernd Frenz and illustrator Andreas Wehrheim are a well-established team when it comes to presenting economic facts in an entertaining way. As early as 2025, they wrote and illustrated a 110-year company chronicle for the Hanover-based Peter Schneider Group, which offers a wide range of services nationwide in the building cleaning and catering sectors. After Frenz & Wehrheim took a look back at the group’s past in the comic book “A Journey Through the Company’s History,” their latest work looks thirty years into the future to paint a picture of how autonomous cleaning devices and personalized nutrition might evolve over the coming decades.
To make reading fun for everyone again, they package all the information into two science-fiction adventures that are as lighthearted as they are thrilling, venturing into galaxies that no Peter Schneider cleaning robot has ever seen before.

Bela Sobottke

Berlin - Germany

https://2werk.de/

Bela Sobottke (born in 1975) studied communication design and works as a freelance graphic designer and comic artist in Berlin. He has published various gritty genre comics such as *The Legend of Kronos Rocco* and *Terror 3000*. His new ten-page comic, *Beth Reeves & Old Man Rocco*, is currently being published in *Cozmic 11*.

The image on display is a double splash page from Bela’s comic “Terror 3000.” It depicts a scene from the life of one of the main characters: Yun looks back on his time on Mars, when he fought against the Cohaagen militias in the Mars Wars and had to detonate the Fat Boy. No more is revealed about this period of his life; the comic’s readers, just like the visitors to this exhibition, must use their imagination to fill in the rest. “Terror 3000” was published in 2024 by Gringo Comics, caused quite a stir in the press, and is currently available in its second edition at comic book stores or directly from the publisher’s shop. Bernd Frenz

Hanover - Germany

Bernd Frenz at Gringo Comics

Bernd Frenz conducted his first interview with a comic artist in 1990 for the Bremen-based comic magazine “Panel.” Since then, he has written numerous articles for trade magazines such as “Alfonz – der Comicreporter,” “Phantastisch!,” and “Reddition,” and his expertise is also incorporated into the accompanying texts for many comic anthologies. For the website “europecomics.com,” he wrote an English-language article on the “History of German Comics,” and he also authored the catalog text for the exhibition “30 Years of GRINGO COMICS” at the Comic Museum in Erlangen.

As a comic book writer, he contributes to well-known franchises such as “Vic the Viking,” “DreamWorks Dragons,” and “Eldrador Creatures,” as well as for the classic crime and adventure series “Phantom,” which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. Bernd Frenz’s comics are published in countries such as Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Sweden, and the United States. He is also a sought-after writer of non-fiction comics on economic and historical topics.

Project »Gebäudereinigung der Zukunft« (Future of Building Cleaning)

Author Bernd Frenz and illustrator Andreas Wehrheim are a well-established team when it comes to presenting economic facts in an entertaining way. Back in 2025, they wrote and illustrated a 110-year corporate chronicle for the Hannover-based Peter Schneider Group, which offers a wide range of services nationwide in the building cleaning and catering industries. After Frenz & Wehrheim took a look back at the group’s history in the comic book *A Journey Through the Company’s History*, their latest work looks thirty years into the future to paint a picture of how autonomous cleaning devices and personalized nutrition might evolve over the coming decades.
To ensure that everyone enjoys reading it again, they package all the information into two science-fiction adventures that are as lighthearted as they are exciting, venturing into galaxies that no Peter Schneider cleaning robot has ever seen before.

Project “Alpha Mods”

“Alpha Mods P.D.” was a six-part comic series for the children's magazine “Five!, published by Blue Ocean Entertainment in Stuttgart. The plot was based on a ride at Europa-Park in Rust that featured a science-fiction story as its backdrop: On a distant planet, the police are searching for the best drivers in the galaxy to help them in their fight against crime. To this end, they distribute a computer game across all inhabited worlds, and four children from Earth end up scoring the highest. From then on, Ian, Spike, MJ, and Zoe are repeatedly summoned via dimensional jumps to help out whenever futuristic speed demons go too far.
Along with the comics, toy cars and audio plays based on “Alpha Mods P.D.” were also released. The content for these diverse products was based on a story bible that laid out the background of this themed universe.
The biggest challenge for the comic writer was to create self-contained stories, each only four pages long, that were also thematically linked by a common thread. This was ultimately so successful that the six episodes were later compiled into a booklet-style album and sold at Europa-Park.

The “Phantom” comic character in the episode “Dark Smoke Over Bangalla”

In 2014, Bernd Frenz conducted an interview with Hamburg-based illustrator Heiner Bade, who drew the “Phantom” comic character for the Swedish magazine FANTOMEN from 1975 to 2022. This led to a long-standing friendship, which culminated in Frenz writing the script for Bade’s final Phantom publication, “Dark Smoke Over Bangalla,” and since then he has regularly written new Phantom adventures for artists from around the world.
In the tradition of Lee Falk, the creator of the costumed hero, Phantom takes up the fight against illegal rainforest logging in “Dark Smoke Over Bangalla”; the story addresses an issue that was highly relevant a few years ago: the fact that strict export bans could be easily circumvented if the protected tropical woods had first been processed into charcoal.
We would like to thank publisher Georg Tempel for providing us with several pages featuring German text from the comic “Dark Smoke Over Bangalla” for the exhibition; these pages are included in the album “Deadly Dinosaurs,” published by him, which contains a total of two stories by Bernd Frenz.

Georg  von Westphalen

Cologne- Germany

https://www.cimoc.de · KayfaBizarro.Pages.dev

Georg Graf von Westphalen, born in Cologne in 1971, is a physician by training and has been working for the medical network DocCheck.com since 2000. As a freelancer, he draws comics and cartoons, develops character designs (including Bernd das Brot), and designs card and board games. For him, comics serve both as a diary and as a way to think things through to their conclusion and open them up for discussion. Mostly satirical, he often tackles politics, medicine, society, and the big questions. His work has been exhibited in Cologne, Aachen, Berlin, Leipzig, and at the Erlangen Comic Salon, among other places.

Together with his cousin Andreas, he wrote and illustrated “Hilfe, ich bin ein Mensch!,” a graphic exploration of human nature, which he promptly cut up after its publication. From this, he developed “KayfaBizarro Cut & Play Comics”: comics to print out, cut up, and play with, including the “MedKayfab” variant as a medical educational game. He shares his brushes and digital tools on GeorgBrush.club. On CancelThisComic.Substack.com, he experiments with AI tools, co-creation, and non-linear storytelling.

Gernod Gayk

Hanover - Germany

Gernod Gayk was born in the Harz Mountains in 1976. He moved to Hanover to study visual communication at a university of applied sciences — a program he completed with the comic “Nase ab” as his thesis—and now works there as a graphic designer.

In the 1980s, we had very different ideas about what the year 2000 would bring. We expected chaos caused by a total computer failure or people flying around with jetpacks. Neither of these things happened. So can we already imagine today what the very distant future will be like? U.T.E. and Dü53 show us the world in their time and how it has developed.

Hannah Kronen

Münster - Germany

https://hkronen.artstation.com

Hannah is a 28-year-old freelance illustrator from Münster. She sees illustration as a kind of puzzle-solving: racking her brains, tinkering, failing, and drawing until an idea becomes the best possible visual solution. She is currently working on a science comic for master’s-level lectures in chemical engineering; inspired by graphic novels of all kinds, historical fiction, nettle tea with matching pastries, and audiobooks by Walter Moers.

Rust-Bucket Ride to Babel (RB2) is a sci-fi comic with a utopian theme: living together despite radical differences.

The protagonist, Beta, is an interplanetary bus driver, built like a tank, all thumbs, and with her heart on her sleeve.

- She gets fired and is attacked by space pirates during her last shift → bus crash on a volcanic planet.
- Here, a translation implant malfunctions → Passengers of different species can no longer communicate with one another
- Beta must mediate and in doing so discovers her true strength
- Humorous, quirky characters, adventure, and light social commentary
- Goal: an optimistic alternative to dystopias; a story about improvisation and hope for a more united future

Each panel captures a moment of quiet observation and playful discovery, inviting the viewer to reflect on how a sense of self can emerge from small, ordinary details. The series is created using a paper cut-out technique, giving it a tactile, layered sense of curiosity and connection.https://HatiyeGarip.com/Finding-the-Dots

Heiner Bade

Hamburg - Germany

Heiner Bade was one of the few German artists who was able to earn a living exclusively through realistic comics. From 1975 to 2022, he drew a total of 90 complete adventures featuring the hero “Phantom”—created by Lee Falk—for the Swedish magazine FANTOMEN.
While this brought him great prominence throughout Scandinavia, he remained virtually unknown in Germany for a long time, as all translations from *FANTOMEN* into German between 1978 and 1983 were published without crediting the authors and artists. It wasn’t until 2014 that Bernd Frenz tracked him down through true detective work and was able to persuade him to give his first in-depth interview for a German-language audience. This led to a long-standing friendship, culminating in Frenz writing the manuscript for Bade’s final *Phantom* publication before Bade turned his attention definitively to painting.

“Dark Smoke Over Bangalla” and Dali-Style Paintings

Bade was a great admirer of the work of the Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí, whose style he adapted for his own acrylic paintings and supplemented with the “Phantom” motif.
Sadly, Heiner Bade passed away in December 2025 while preparations for this exhibition were underway. To showcase the full range of his artistic work, we are displaying several of his paintings alongside a few pages from his final “Phantom” comic.
Due to his sudden death, he is unfortunately unable to witness the launch of the Heiner Bade Collection dedicated to him—an event he had been very much looking forward to, as it presents his best works from forty years of “Phantom” for the first time in high-quality hardcover albums.

News from Mangrovia
“Mangrovia” is a fictional treehouse city—the world’s last metropolis. While urban life pulsates in the treetops, martial machines on the lower levels extract the coveted resin that flows beneath the bark. The resulting pollution seeps all the way down into the root system, where unspeakable monstrosities lurk. Mangrovia is the world in which Jan Bintakies’ new story—which he is currently writing—will take place. The pages on display introduce the world-building and ask whether humanity is doomed to repeat its mistakes forever.

Is a digitized consciousness still truly human?

After a serious car accident, there is no hope left for Mara’s boyfriend Joshua—his organs are on the verge of failing at any moment. In this difficult moment, a representative from “Mensana” approaches the young woman: The neuroscientific research program promises to preserve the consciousness of a terminally ill person by means of a digital copy of their brain. How wonderful it is to talk to Joshua via video simulation on a tablet, to remain together, and to share everyday life! But soon, Mara’s need for physical experiences and Joshua’s realization that, in a state of eternal consciousness, he is losing sight of the meaning of all things lead to rapidly growing tensions…
In their compelling and highly topical science fiction story, Julia Zejn and Matthias Lehmann explore the question of what defines a human being, the consequences of the fusion of humans and AI, and the limits of medicine.

ABOUT THE SERIES “Der kleine Perry”
“Perry Rhodan” is the world’s largest science fiction series. But what if the famous space hero had plunged into his adventures as a little boy? That’s what Olaf Brill and Michael Vogt—who have both already made their mark in the Perry universe—thought, and they tell Perry Rhodan’s story from the very beginning and in a completely new way. In three volumes so far (published by Carlsen Verlag), the young space traveler journeys through space, visits other planets, and encounters many different beings. He and his friends must solve puzzles, uncover secrets, resolve conflicts, and discover ever-new wonders!

Thomas von Kummant (born March 27, 1972, in Munich) is a renowned German comic artist, illustrator, and concept artist. He is internationally recognized for his distinctive, digitally painted style, which is strongly reminiscent of cinematic concept art.

After earning his degree from a design college in Munich, Thomas joined the collaborative studio DIE ARTILLERIE in 1998. In 2019, he founded the collaborative studio REAKT · R in Munich. From his studios, Thomas has been working for over 25 years as a freelance illustrator, art director, concept artist, storyboard artist, character designer, and comic artist for advertising agencies, publishers, and production companies worldwide. He brings his passion for storytelling and his commitment to the synergy of aesthetics and narrative to both his own comic projects and film projects for studios large and small around the globe.

Many of his major comic successes were created in close collaboration with author and screenwriter Benjamin von Eckartsberg.

“GUNG HO”: This post-apocalyptic, five-volume coming-of-age saga is his most internationally renowned masterpiece. The series was produced specifically for the French market and has won several awards worldwide. GUNG HO has been exceptionally successful and has been published internationally in six languages: German, French, Spanish, English, Italian, and Polish.

Thomas is currently exploring how AI can enrich the early stages of visual development for animation and advertising projects—or how AI can be trained to develop its own style in order to use this technology in an ethically responsible manner.
